Cheteshwar Pujara, a dynamic red-ball batsman from India, scored a milestone today by scoring a double century in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25 during the match between Saurashtra and Chhattisgarh.

The 36-year-old scored 234 runs in his second match of the season, comprising 25 fours and a six.

In the process, Pujara joined the likes of Bradman and other sporting greats. The Indian moved up to fourth place in the overall list of most double centuries in first-class cricket with 18 tons, leaving behind former English cricketers Herbert Sutcliffe and Mark Ramprakash, who have 17 first-class centuries to their names.

Don Bradman – 37

Legendary Australian batsman Donald Bradman tops the list of players with most double centuries in first-class cricket. Bradman has hit a staggering 37 double tons, of which he scored twelve for Australia in Test matches, of which seven came from touring Australian teams. Eight of the remaining 25 came while playing for New South Wales, eight for South Australia, one for WM Woodfull’s XI and one for DG Bradman’s XI. It should be noted that Bradman achieved the feat in 234 games.

Wally Hammond – 36

England’s Wally Hammond, who played between 1920 and 1951, has amassed a total of 36 double centuries and is second on the list. Hammonds made the record in as many as 634 matches: seven for England in Test matches, twenty-four for Gloucestershire and five for touring Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) teams.

Elias Henry Hendren (aka Patsy Hendren) – 22

Patsy Hendren is the second Englishwoman on the list with a total of 22 double tons. Hendren needed 833 games to achieve the feat over a playing career that spanned between 1907 and 1938. Hendren’s tally includes one for England in a test match, four for touring MCC teams, fifteen for Middlesex and two for the MCC.

Cheteshwar Pujara – 18

Cheteshwar Pujara is the only Indian cricketer listed with a total of 18 double tons. Pujara has been one of the biggest names in red-ball cricket in the Indian domestic circuit and also for the national team until late. The talented right-hander completed his 18 in just 261 games and has a chance to surpass other greats on this list. Pujara got three for India in Test matches, two for India A, one for India Blue in the Duleep Trophy final, nine for Saurashtra and three for Sussex.
