Former Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra has shared his thoughts on whether legendary MS Dhoni should retire from the Indian Premier League (IPL). There is still no clarity on Dhoni’s future in the IPL after he handed over the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to Ruturaj Gaikwad in IPL 2024.
Dhoni, one of the most successful captains the game has ever seen and one of the greatest wicket-keepers of all time, left his fans and the cricketing world in suspense about his future in the IPL after CSK failed to qualify for the round of 16 of the IPL 2024 under Gaikwad’s captaincy.
Amit Mishra predicts MS Dhoni’s return for IPL 2025
He has been in great form this season but still, he played at numbers 8 and 9 for CSK in the tournament, leaving the world baffled about his return for another season in 2025. However, Mishra is confident that the former CSK captain will play in IPL 2025.
The former player said that Dhoni is a legendary figure in the CSK team and his association with the franchise will last for years. Since Mishra said that Dhoni might return as a player and mentor for CSK in the upcoming IPL 2025, he will definitely play one more season before retiring from the game.
Mishra said Dhoni will form a core squad for CSK before he retires from the IPL, though he will remain with the team in any capacity even after ending his career. He reiterated that the former Indian captain will definitely play as a player in the upcoming IPL 2025.
Amit Mishra: MS Dhoni to prepare core squad for CSK
Amit Mishra said on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast on YouTube, “MS Dhoni is not retiring because he is a very big name in the CSK team, a very big thing, and a lot of things are associated with him, so I think he will definitely be with the team as a player next year. He may not play all the matches, even if he will be with the team as a player and mentor, but he will definitely play in IPL 2025. He will prepare a core squad for CSK, but it is certain that he will be associated with Chennai in any capacity.
But I think Dhoni will definitely play in IPL 2025 as a player because being with CSK next year means you are preparing for the next two years. During this time, they will prepare their core team and captain, and if something goes up or down, then they can make changes. After playing in IPL 2025, Dhoni can announce his retirement from IPL.”
In the same podcast, Mishra accused Dhoni and Virat Kohli of destroying his international career. He played under the captaincy of Kohli and Dhoni but neither of them gave him more freedom as he ended his career with 156 international wickets in 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is. He even called current Indian captain Rohit Sharma his favourite player, ignoring Dhoni.
