Pooran is yet to make his Test debut but has featured in five First Class matches.
A major problem in the West Indies in recent years has been the lack of depth and incentive to play in the longer format. Most of the players are superstars in the T20 leagues, which keeps them busy throughout the year, leaving no time for test matches.
There have been some cases where some players have expressed their desire to participate in West Indies red ball cricket, but as they are busy playing in various franchise leagues, they never played in the regional national competition. Cricket West Indies (CWI) had maintained the rule that players who wanted to play for the West Indies had to play in this local tournament to make a case.
Since the competition overlapped with the Indian Premier League (IPL), players like Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran were unable to play. They obviously preferred to play in the bigger T20 league for financial gain as they were sold at a high price and could not afford to miss the tournament.

However, that has changed since last month and players are eligible to be selected without participating in this local tournament. Therefore, several players like Hetmyer, Pooran and Hope will be able to play in Test cricket in the coming times.
Nicholas Pooran could make a shocking Test debut
Now that the selection policy has changed, Nicholas Pooran, one of the biggest names in T20 cricket, could be selected in the future and play in Test matches for the West Indies. He is yet to make his Test debut but has featured in five First-Class matches, with the last one dating back to 2020, when West Indies A played an unofficial Test against New Zealand A.
In all, he has 319 runs at an average of 31.90 in ten first-class innings, including two fifties and a best of 69. Given his capabilities, he is much better than these numbers suggest and can do wonders in the format .
Meanwhile, the same applies to the likes of Hetmyer and Hope, who have been out of Test cricket for a while. They may not just be known as white-ball specialists and carve out a niche for themselves in red-ball cricket as well.
Talent has never been an issue in West Indies cricket. If everyone comes together, better days surely await them.
