The ICC fined him 20% of his party fees and gave him one demerit point for his actions.
Virat Kohli has been in the limelight since the first day of the Boxing Day Test due to his shoulder bump with Sam Konstas. He probably tried to break his concentration since Konstas was batting well, but he should have avoided it because it was inappropriate and unnecessary.
The ICC fined him 20% of his party fees and gave him one demerit point for his actions. However, several commentators and experts felt that the punishment was lenient, given the seriousness of Kohli’s actions.
On Channel 7, the former Australian captain exclaimed that the punishment was not severe enough, citing the enormity of the incident. He felt people would think it’s acceptable now.
“Personally, I don’t think it was tough enough. There have been precedents; Things have happened in the past and generally everything has gone 15-25% right, but let’s take a look at the enormity of the incident. It was the most watched day of cricket all year around the world. Imagine if that happened now in a grade game. What is going to happen? “I think people will think that’s almost acceptable now.”
It’s a slap on the wrist: Sunil Gavaskar
Meanwhile, former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar also had similar views on the punishment, stating that it is a “slap on the wrist”. He added that people should not remember Kohli for this incident but for his batting achievements.
“That’s a slap on the wrist. All of these players are highly paid professionals. Any fine will have to have a deterrent effect. That’s in the books that you have well x amount. It can be understood that the ICC match referee went by the books and what the playing conditions are, but I just hope that Kohli, who has been one of the best players in the world, is not remembered for this. “He has to be remembered for what he did with the bat.”

The Australian media made sure that this incident maligned Kohli’s image as much as possible. He has been on the cover of most of their publications and his declining form has been recent.
He looked good during his 86-run stand in the Boxing Day Test before stealing one straight from the wicketkeeper. Kohli would want to take advantage of this innings and make a great innings in the next ones.
