Karun Nair has a way of life. The former Karnataka batsman is furious in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy for Vidarbha scoring 664 runs in just six innings at an astonishing average of 664.
The run tally included five hundred and four of them unbeaten as Vidarbha reached the semi-finals against Maharashtra. Not long ago, Nair was dumped by Karnataka and was desperately looking for a new team, wherever he could play.
After meeting Abey Kuruvilla, who was a coach during his under-19 days, Nair played for Vidarbha and never looked back.
In a chat with ESPNCricinfo, Nair quipped that he never thought of voicing the things he discussed with former Karnataka batsman Robin Uthappa a while ago.
“Interestingly I said that I think I need to score a hundred in every innings to get attention. “I think I may have unknowingly expressed something like this in that conversation with Robbie, and that’s coming true,” Nair said.
Nair became the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to score a triple century in Tests in 2016, when he scored 303 not out against England in Chennai. But just two Tests later, he was dropped from the national team and never played international cricket again.

Accumulating runs in the domestic circuit did not help at all as he was overlooked for the Duleep Trophy after scoring 694 runs in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season. Despite the setback, Nair continued to work hard and is currently enjoying his time in the area.
“I don’t think in these six games it has ever occurred to me that I have so many runs to be able to play however I want. Yes, obviously I would be lying if I said I haven’t thought about the dark days, but I managed to control those thoughts and control myself and say that the team needs something more for me and that I need to stay. there until the end and make sure I cross the line,” Nair said.
Nair, who is hoping to play for India again, knows that scoring hundreds is the “only currency” in cricket ahead of the Vijay Hazare Trophy semi-final.
