Former Indian captain Virat Kohli may not be part of the Indian team for the upcoming T20 World Cup. According to initial reports in the Telegraph, Kohli may not be in the management’s plans for the mega event.
The Indian think tank led by Ajit Agarkar believes that Kohli’s pace of play in T20 cricket is not up to modern standards. The management says “slow wickets don’t suit him”, and the BCCI chairman of selectors is expected to speak to Virat to chart the way forward for the former India captain.
Kohli returned to the Indian T20I team in the series against Afghanistan. He couldn’t score too many and squatted in the third T20I against the Afghans. Kohli then skipped the Test series against England due to personal reasons and has been out of the team since then.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2024. “We will discuss Virat’s role in due course,” Shah said. Telegraph reports further say that Ajit Agarkar will take the final decision.
The management wants to include the young players who have been part of the team since last year. Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube are among the players, as is Hardik Pandya, despite not playing any form of international cricket since the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Harbhajan Singh is furious over the fact that Kohli might not be in the Indian T20 World Cup squad. He believes Kohli will return to the team using IPL 2024.
“The IPL is coming up and then there is the World Cup. Virat Kohli’s bat will make the same noise as before, probably louder. Of course, Virat has [unfinished business]. That World Cup trophy. The last time he beat it, it wasn’t Virat, but Cheeku. He won the World Cup on his first try, but that’s the fun part of fortune. But from then on, Kohli became a great player, but without a World Cup: he played in 2015, 2019 and now also in 2023. But the trophy has not returned home yet, so he would regret it,” Harbhajan said in his YouTube channel.

Virat Kohli was part of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning team under MS Dhoni. He later also won the ICC Champions Trophy for the Indian team with MS Dhoni. Since then, he has been a part of every Indian team that reached the final or semi-final of ICC events. His last defeat was in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. He led the Indian team to the 2019 semi-final which they unfortunately lost to New Zealand.
I can’t stomach Virat Kohli not winning another World Cup: Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh concluded by saying that he finds it difficult to digest the fact that Kohli has to end his career without winning another ICC tournament as a player.
“Does a player like Virat Kohli not win a World Cup? I can’t digest it. No matter how many records he makes, how many runs he scores, as far as I know, his hunger will never diminish. And an important part of that is lifting that shiny trophy. Every player’s dream is to win a World Cup trophy. His records will remain with you until the end. But people don’t remember the records; they remember the trophies,” concluded Harbhajan Singh.
Virat Kohli will return to competitive cricket in IPL 2024 after skipping the England series due to personal reasons.
