PSL survival in doubt as IPL clash to eliminate foreign stars, team owners threaten PCB

The possible schedule clash between the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) next year has left the PSL team owners worried.

The PSL franchise owners have written a letter to PSL director Salman Naseer demanding clarity on the availability of foreign players for the season.

Pakistan Super League and Indian Premier League prepare for scheduling clash

The Pakistan Cricket League will clash with the Indian Premier League next year as the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be played in the February-March window.

The PSL is usually held in February-March but has been moved to the April-May window. The April-May window means it will directly clash with the IPL, which takes place from March-May.

This comes as a blow to PCB and PSL as direct competition with the world’s biggest T20, IPL, will not benefit them.

A source has revealed that the PSL franchise owners wrote a letter to the PSL director and asked him to clarify the availability of foreign stars and the schedule.

“The owners want clarification from the PCB about which players would be available for the PSL if the IPL is also held at the same time and also about the telecast timings,” the source told PTI.

PSL owners concerned about lack of clarity – Source

Notably, franchise owners are in the dark about matters related to the Pakistan Super League, with the Pakistan Cricket Board fully focused on hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 next year.

There is a fear among the owners that the Champions Trophy will be the top priority for the board and PCB will ignore the PSL issues.

“Owners are concerned about the lack of clarity. “The England and Wales Cricket Board and some other boards are talking about restrictions on their players playing in leagues, so they want clarity before the PSL player draft,” the source said.

“Some of the franchise owners have asked Salman Naseer to fulfill the promise of creating an independent PSL secretariat, something that has not happened in 10 years.”

Meanwhile, there is a possibility of more teams being added to PSL after the next edition as franchises and the PCB review their agreements.
