Punjab Kings co-owner Preity Zinta reveals reason why franchise ditched ‘Arsenal-like’ jersey

Punjab Kings, the IPL franchise unveiled their new jersey before IPL 2024 on March 16. The franchise finished eighth in the points table winning six games and losing eight.

The jersey was launched amid the presence of co-owner Preity Zinta and Satish Menon, the CEO of the franchise. Over the years, the Punjab kings have tried every possible way to win the title but have failed. It could be said that they have been the team with the worst results in the tournament. They have played in the final only once and have finished sixth or lower in most seasons.

It was Punjab Kings captain Shikhar Dhawan who unveiled the new jersey. Preity Zinta further revealed why the Punjab Kings gave up the white, gray and silver on their jersey. She said they were almost forced to remove the shirt after the BCCI had her objections. She further said that the board asked them to give up their jersey because the ball matched the color of their jersey at the time.

The new red shirt has been made according to international standards. The fabric of the new t-shirt has been imported from Vietnam and its manufacturing has been carried out in India by PlayR.

It’s 20 percent lighter and 30 percent more stretchy and is made with anti-sweat, anti-odor, antibacterial and anti-pilling technologies. The t-shirt is even more protected from UV rays and therefore the color will not fade.

The jersey has been made to international standards and the color red represents passion, spirit and vigour, something that the Shers of Punjab stand for.

“We are delighted to present our new jersey in front of our loyal fans, who are the backbone of the team. The new colors reflect the emotions and pulse of Punjab and everything it represents. “The team will represent the fans on the field and create unforgettable memories in the new stadium.” said Preity G Zinta, co-owner of Punjab Kings.

The Kesari patterns on the bottom of the t-shirt are inspired by fire, a symbol deeply rooted in our traditions, which resonates with auspicious beginnings. Furthermore, it signifies the pride of being a Punjabi and the richness of history associated with it.

“The love and passion of the sher team is contagious and it’s hard for me to put into words how happy I am to be back here. “We have an exciting team this season who will give everything on the field as we look forward to wearing the vibrant new jersey and playing in the new stadium in front of all of you.” said Shikhar Dhawan, the captain of Punjab Kings.

Even though Punjab has not had good seasons, Shikhar Dhawan has scored more than 500 runs in the last two seasons. He scored 460 runs in 2022 and 273 runs in 2023. The last time Punjab Kings made it to the playoffs was in 2014, when they played the final against KKR and lost. They have finished sixth or lower consistently in the league.
