Ranji Trophy 2024 players who could make the step up to India’s Test team

Let’s look for some players whose performance could help them get closer to the Indian team in this Ranji Trophy season.

The Ranji Trophy for the 2024/25 season will begin on Friday (October 11), with several quality players in action. This new season will present an opportunity for several players to put in consistent performances and push for selection for the national team.

The competition in the national team is intense, so players have to perform almost always to stay in contention. Several players are close to the national team and will have to act in their respective departments to break the door.

Let’s look for some players whose performance could help them get closer to the Indian team in this Ranji Trophy season.

Sai Sudharsan

Among the most impressive young players in the country, Sai Sudharsan has been in good form of late, scoring runs all over the place. He has 1526 runs at an average of 37.21, including four fifties and centuries, in 41 first-class innings.

Recently, he scored a huge amount against India A in the Duleep Trophy, showing his class and technique. If he continues to act in a similar manner, he will soon knock on the door and press hard on the red ball team.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

The top spot in the Indian team is congested as there are several quality players in the fray, probably ahead of Ruturaj Gaikwad. Even his recent form in red-ball cricket has not been convincing enough.

However, his technique is sound and he averages 42.25, including 12 fifties, in 56 first-class innings. The upcoming Ranji Trophy season will allow him to improve his game and move up the pecking order.

Ishan Kishan

After losing the BCCI central contract, Ishan Kishan will captain Jharkhand in the initial phase of the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy. He will also have the chance to impress with the willow and regain his place in the national team.

At one point, he acted as a replacement for Rishabh Pant but things went poorly for him and although he has done well in patches since his return, the selectors would wait longer before including him again. Since he can also keep wickets, Kishan will surely be one of the options in the wicketkeeper-batsman section if his performances are anything to go by.

Nitish Kumar Reddy

Nitish Kumar Reddy has had an excellent start to his India career, scoring a fifty in just his second T20I. But he also has the ability to be a solid red ball player as his skills are just too good.

He also participated in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy, although he could not achieve desirable performances. Since he is an all-rounder with pace bowling, Nitish’s performances will be closely monitored and if his progress is good enough, he can be accelerated to higher levels.

Tanush Kotian

Tanush Kotian has been creating ripples in red-ball cricket of late with both bat and ball. He is a more than useful batsman in the lower order.

With Ravichandran Ashwin aging, the team will surely consider options in the domestic circuit, and Tanush will be one of those on the radar. His recent performances have been very impressive and he hopes to continue this in the prestigious Ranji Trophy.

Manav Suthar

There is obvious potential in Manav Suthar and his craft. Manav spins his left arm fingers and is very accurate, making him the ideal successor to Ravindra Jadeja.

Overall, he has 77 first-class wickets at 27.41 runs each, including five four-wicket hauls and four five-wicket hauls. Given Jadeja’s injury problems of late, Manav must be among the players to replace him, and if he can perform similarly in the Ranji Trophy, it will strengthen his case.

Arshdeep Singh

There has been talk of including Arshdeep Singh in the national Test setup. India have been missing a true left-arm pacer in their ranks and since he showed the ability to succeed in Test matches, Arshdeep can be a solid option in the coming times.

However, he would need to back up his performances in the Duleep Trophy in the Ranji Trophy and press his case further. Given his ability to swing the ball, he is surely ahead of other left-arm pacers and if he continues to impress, a Test debut might not be too far away.
