Former England Captain Michael Vaughan chose Indian player Ravichandran Ashwin over Australia’s legendary Nathan Lyon while speaking to Dinesh Karthik in a recent Cricbuzz show called “The Chatter”. Vaughan made this claim just after Ashwin became the second Indian bowler to record 500 wickets in the longest format of the game.
Ravichandran Ashwin made the elite list yesterday on the second day of the third day of the five-match series against England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. The 37-year-old entered the 500 club by claiming the wicket of opening batsman Zak Crawley during the third session and the Englishman returned to the pavilion with just 15 runs.
However, Ashwin’s significant individual achievement did not help. India’s because the visitors won most of the sessions yesterday. While Crawley also got out cheaply against the run of play, his opening partner, left-hand batsman Ben Duckett, showed the improvements he made after the first two Tests in Hyderabad and Vizag with a sensational first red-ball century in Indian conditions.
While India posted 445 runs in the first innings, England virtually closed the gap by posting 207 at the end of Day 2, losing just two wickets from Crawley and No. 3 batsman Ollie Pope. Just after stumps were called off on the second day, Team India suffered another setback when pace-setter Ravichandran Ashwin retired from the entirety of the third Test, which has 2 more days left after today.
Ashwin’s absence means Rohit Sharma’s team has now become even more inexperienced with 12th man Devdutt Padikkal coming in as his replacement for Day 3 proceedings. The day has already started with Duckett and Joe Root at the crease and it will be interesting see how India cope without their most experienced spinner.
“I would choose Ravichandran Ashwin” – Michael Vaughan makes an honest statement
When former Indian batsman Dinesh Karthik asked Michael Vaughan to choose between Ravichandran Ashwin and Nathan Lyon, the former England captain chose the Indian veteran. Although Vaughan gave Lyon the praise of him, he felt that Ashwin certainly had the advantage over the Australian due to his variations and also his performance with the bat.
“Nathan Lyon, another great, it’s wonderful to see a pitcher who doesn’t have a lot of mystery, he just has talent and consistency, but he doesn’t have the carrom ball, he doesn’t have a slider, but he’s consistent. spinner,” said Michael Vaughan via cricbuzz.
“If you ask me to choose one of the two, I would choose Ashwin because I think he has a few more variations and obviously offers a few more runs with the bat. So, because of Ashwin’s batting, I would pick him over Lyon,” Vaughan added.
“I would probably consider him (Lyon) if we were playing in Australia because of the bounce, but almost anywhere else in the world I would go with R Ashwin. It’s a good conversation and a good decision between two world-class artists, but since you’re putting pressure on me, I would choose Ashwin,” Vaughan concluded.
