Released Mumbai Indians and all-rounders SRH return to Test squad with WTC final in sight

All-rounder Marco Jansen and fast bowler Gerald Coetzee are back in the Test team for the first time since last summer’s series against India.

South Africa Test team coach Shukri Conrad has named a 14-player squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, starting in Durban later this month.

Temba Bavuma will captain the team after being cleared for selection following a fitness test on Monday. He has fully recovered from the left elbow injury that ruled him out of the recent Test tour of Bangladesh.

Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee return to Test squad

All-rounder Marco Jansen and fast bowler Gerald Coetzee are back in the Test team for the first time since last summer’s series against India.

“It is also a pleasure to welcome Marco and Gerald to the test team. “They have both worked incredibly hard during their conditioning programs and it is great to see them back, ready to contribute to the team,” said Shukri Conrad.

The pace attack for South Africa’s upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka will feature Kagiso Rabada, Dane Paterson and Wiaan Mulder. Rabada is a key figure in the fast bowling unit, while Paterson and Mulder complete the pace line-up.

In the spinning department, Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy have been named as the two frontline spinners of the series. Maharaj is an experienced left-arm spinner, while Muthusamy adds depth to the spin options.

South Africa are aiming for their first World Test Championship (WTC) final appearance and need to win all four home Tests (two against Sri Lanka and two against Pakistan) to guarantee a place in the final. However, they could still make it three wins out of four, depending on results elsewhere.

The two-Test series will begin in Durban on November 27 and then the teams will move to Gqeberha for the second Test starting on December 5.
