The Indian cricket team is all set to announce its squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 in the last week of April. As per PTI reports, it is learned that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will name a 15-member team by May 1, 2024.
The T20 World Cup 2024 is all set to begin from June 1 and the final set will be played on the 30th of the month. The tournament will be played in the United States of America and the Caribbean and will feature 20 teams, which will happen for the first time in history.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has set deadlines for all teams to announce their squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 by May 1. Teams, however, can make changes to their World Cup squad until May 25, a day before the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 concludes.
A source close to the BCCI claimed that the selectors will be in a position to select the players by the end of April as per the IPL form. Speaking to PTI on condition of anonymity, he explained:
“The Indian team will be selected sometime in the last week of April, by which time the first half of the IPL will be over and the national selection committee will be in a position to assess the form and fitness of the contenders.”
The BCCI source further stated that India will send the first batch of its players to the US right after the league phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He also revealed that the team would follow a similar pattern for the tournament. . they did it last year for the ICC World Test Championship. He added:
“The first batch of cricketers will leave for New York immediately after the end of the league phase of the IPL on May 19. Those players whose teams do not qualify for the final four will depart early, as was the case during last year’s WTC final. year.”
National selectors travel to watch most matches: BCCI selectors on Indian players
A BCCI source further stated that the selectors will travel to the stadiums to keep a close eye on the Indian players for the T20 World Cup 2024. He also stated that if during the tournament any of the contracted players get injured, they will be under the close observation of the ANC. . He stated:
“Obviously, if any contracted or centrally targeted player is injured, their case will automatically fall under the purview of the NCA Sports Medicine and Science team. Also for centrally contracted players and target players (India A, Emerging India), S&C coaches and physiotherapists must keep the NCA informed.
“But when players are signed by franchises, the BCCI cannot dictate how many matches they will play. As far as the bowlers are concerned, it is only four overs.”
It is also learned that the BCCI does not give instructions to the players to manage their workload. The ongoing IPL will be extremely vital for all the Indian players as they will be eager to make a mark and book their place in the team for the T20 World Cup 2024.
