Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has expressed his desire to coach another Indian Premier League (IPL) team after being sacked by Delhi Capitals. He said that he would love to take charge again in the league and also spoke about his experience at the previous franchise.

Australian legend Ricky Ponting is considered one of the brightest minds in world cricket. Apart from being a fantastic player, he is also one of the best coaches and has made significant contributions around the world.

In the IPL, Ricky Ponting was also associated with Delhi Capitals as the head coach. The former Australian captain joined the team in 2018 and after that, he changed the way the Delhi-based franchise played cricket and since then, the franchise has been quite decent.

Under Ricky Ponting, Delhi Capitals played their first final in 2021 but failed to win the title. However, ahead of the 2025 edition of the tournament, the franchise parted ways with their head coach as Delhi Capitals owners were reportedly unhappy with his performances.

Ricky Ponting claimed that he had a great time at Delhi Capitals but admitted that things did not go his way. He said that he wanted to bring the trophy home for the franchise. He also revealed why the franchise parted ways with him and while speaking to ICC, he explained:

“I would love to coach in the IPL again. I’ve had a great time every year I’ve been involved, whether it was in my early days as a player or the two years I was in Mumbai as head coach. And then I had seven seasons in Delhi, which unfortunately didn’t turn out the way I would have wanted and certainly not the way the franchise would have wanted. I think my coming there was with the aim of trying to bring some silverware to the team and that didn’t happen.”

“They made it very clear that they wanted to go in a different direction with someone who could give them a little bit more time and a little bit more availability during the offseason, really more so I could spend a little bit more time in India with a lot of the local players. I just wasn’t able to do that with the other things I have going on.”

Ricky Ponting further stated that Delhi Capitals are looking for an Indian coach but he is grateful to the franchise. He said that there might be few opportunities for him and he would like to be a coach of a team in the IPL. He explained:

“I think what they’ll find is that they’ll probably end up with a head coach who lives in India. That’s certainly part of the dialogue I’ve had with them anyway. But I’m very grateful for the time I spent there, I met some great people, worked with some great people and obviously worked with some great players over the years as well.

“I wish everyone the best, but as I said, there might be some opportunities for me in the coming months and I would love to get back to coaching in the IPL next season,” he explained.
