This incident could have been a pivotal moment in the match as Pant’s wicket could have taken New Zealand closer to victory.
During the second innings of the third Test between India and New Zealand in Mumbai, Rishabh Pant was lucky when New Zealand decided not to conduct a review after an appeal. However, replays later revealed that he was gone.
The incident occurred on the first ball of the 12th over, Ajaz Patel Patel bowled a slower, shorter ball which led to an appeal from LBW, but it appeared to be turning towards the leg side. Although the ball seemed to be turning down the leg side, Pant took a blow to the body while attempting a shot. New Zealand opted not to review the decision, potentially missing a key opportunity, as Ajaz Patel himself seemed unsure and did not encourage his captain to challenge the decision on the field. Ball tracking later indicated that the delivery was hitting the leg stump, confirming three reds.

India are struggling in the chase, but Rishabh Pant’s quick-fire fifty keeps hopes alive at 92-6, still requiring 55 runs to win.
India defeated New Zealand for 174, setting a target of 147 runs. However, they faced difficulties with the bat and lost quick wickets early on. Key players like Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan fell cheaply, leaving India in a tough spot at 29-5. Rishabh Pant, however, offered some resistance with a quick and well-deserved fifty. At the time of writing, India are 92-6 and still need 55 runs to win, with Pant and Washington Sundar at the goal line.
Ajaz Patel continues to shine for New Zealand, with four wickets, while Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips added one each to the tally.
Despite losing the series 2-0, India should win this Test to avoid a whitewash and keep their hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship final alive.
