Rishabh Pant to replace MS Dhoni at CSK and follow Ricky Ponting’s lead in exiting Delhi Capitals: Report

Delhi Capitals’ decision to part ways with Ricky Ponting has raised many eyebrows. The franchise announced the decision unexpectedly last week.

The former Australia captain was serving as the head coach of the Delhi-based side since 2018. Under his guidance, Delhi Capitals reached the IPL finals for the first time in their history and also qualified for the playoffs twice. However, they could not perform well in the last three seasons, failing to advance past the league stage in any of them.

After three consecutive poor seasons, Delhi Capitals have finally decided to part ways with Ricky Ponting. Following the former Australian cricketer’s sacking as the team’s head coach, there are speculations that Rishabh Pant might also follow in his footsteps.

Is Rishabh Pant leaving Delhi Capitals?

According to recent media reports, Rishabh Pant’s future at Delhi Capitals is uncertain after Ponting’s departure. The wicketkeeper-batsman shares a strong bond with Ponting and might leave the franchise after the latter’s departure.

Ponting had played a key role in elevating Rishabh Pant as the captain of the team in 2021. Though Shreyas Iyer was the captain when Delhi reached the final in 2020, the franchise released him and Pant was named the captain.

According to a report by The Republic, Pant could leave Delhi Capitals for Chennai Super Kings. With MS Dhoni’s days as a player numbered, CSK must be looking for a good replacement and Pant could be a good option. Dhoni is yet to make a decision on his future as a player but it would not be surprising if he retires before or after the next season.

Pant has been playing for Delhi Capitals since their first season in the IPL. He has been with the team since 2016. So far, he has played 111 matches and has scored 3284 runs with the help of one century and 18 half-centuries. He was the leading run-scorer for Delhi even in this year’s IPL, scoring 446 runs with the help of 3 fifties.
