Rohit Sharma not interested in leading all three formats: Sourav Ganguly

Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly revealed that Rohit Sharma did not want to lead the Indian team in all three formats. The Mumbai star took charge of the limited overs teams in December 2021 after Virat Kohli was sacked as ODI captain.

Before that, Kohli had also stepped down as T20I captain. Just before the 2021 T20 World Cup, Kohli had announced that he would step down as captain after the tournament. And in February 2022, Rohit Sharma was also named Test captain after Kohli’s sudden decision to step down as Test captain after the series loss in South Africa.

Even Rohit Sharma was shocked by Kohli’s decision to step down from the Test captaincy despite the successful stint, as he wrote on Instagram: “Surprised!! But congratulations on a successful period as captain.” Sourav Ganguly has now revealed that the veteran batsman was not willing to accept the captaincy in all three formats, but he finally accepted.

“I put a bit of pressure on Rohit Sharma to take up the captain’s role because he was not interested in leading all three formats of the game. So maybe I have a little bit of input into that, but no matter who manages, it’s the players who perform well on the field. I was appointed BCCI president to work for the betterment of Indian cricket, this is a small part,” Sourav Ganguly said in season 10 of the reality show Dadagiri Unlimited.

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy record so far:

Under Rohit Sharma, India qualified for the semi-final of the T20 World Cup last year before reaching the final of the ODI World Cup last month. He received praise from everyone for his captaincy and batting performance during the competition as he led India to the World Cup final for the first time since 2011.

Before the World Cup, India won the Asian Cup title. Earlier this year, India also qualified for the final of the World Test Championship, where they lost against Australia. Rohit Sharma will be seen in action later this month when he leads the team in the Test series against South Africa.
