Indian national cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has provided an update on Rishabh Pant who was injured on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test against the New Zealand national cricket team. The match between the teams is underway at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh faced a massive injury scare on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against New Zealand. The batsman appeared to be in immense pain and was carried off the field, with Dhruv Jurel running to the ground to take up the role of the team’s wicketkeeper for the rest of the day.
Rishabh Pant was injured during New Zealand’s innings when he suffered a knock on his knee while keeping the game. He attempted a delivery in the 37th minute, but received a serious blow and immediately fell to the ground, and India’s physiotherapist ran onto the field to treat him.
Rishabh couldn’t walk properly after that hit and was taken off the field. He then did not return to the field because he was deemed unfit to participate the next day. There was no clarity on the severity of the injury to the keeper-batsman, and that worried many.
But now, captain Rohit Sharma has given an update on the fitness of pant Rishabh. He said the keeper-batsman developed swelling in his knee and confirmed that it was the same knee he underwent surgery on after his accident.
Unfortunately, the ball directly hit his kneecap, the same leg on which he had surgery – Rohit Sharma on Rishabh Pant
However, Indian national cricket team captain Rohit Sharma was optimistic about Rishabh Pant getting fit for the match. He said they didn’t want to take the risk; so the wicketkeeper-batsman did not play again. Speaking to reporters, he explained:
“Unfortunately, the ball directly hit his kneecap, the same leg he had surgery on. So he has a little swelling. It’s tender right now, so it’s a precautionary measure. That was the reason he went in Hopefully, he can recover.”
With Rishabh Pant injured, it would have surely given the Indian team management a big headache. He faced a massive life-threatening accident in December 2022. He seriously injured his knee, but after the surgery he worked hard and made a stunning recovery.
We didn’t apply ourselves to the best of our ability – Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma also spoke about New Zealand pacers. He admitted that the opposition pacers played superbly well and took advantage of the conditions well. He also said that they didn’t try hard and weren’t at their best. He elaborated:
“There was attendance and they did well. We didn’t try our best. We just didn’t play well.”
India went all out for just 46 runs
India went all out with just 46 runs, which speaks volumes about the poor effort on their part. Rishabh Pant was the team’s top scorer with 20 runs to his name. Wickets fell like a pack of cards when Matt Henry (five for 15) and William ORourke (four for 22) were all over the hosts. On the second day, the visitors scored 180 for three and had a lead of 134 runs with Rachin Ravindra (22*) and Daryl Mitchell (14*) at the crease.
