India captain Rohit Sharma, along with veteran batsman Virat Kohli and pacer Jasprit Bumrah, will be rested for the tour of Sri Lanka, according to reports in Indian Express. The Men in Blue will tour the island nation for the three ODIs and three T20Is.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants to give Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah a rest so that the trio is ready to return for the two-match Test series against the Bangladesh National Cricket Team. The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led team will tour India for two Tests and three T20Is.

The trio of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah were recently part of the Indian squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Under Rohit’s leadership, India won the tournament and following that, the captain along with Virat announced their retirement from the shortest format of the game.

Since the trio has been playing consistent cricket for the past few months, the BCCI wants to give them extra rest so that they can be fully fit for the important assignments. The squad for the Sri Lanka series will be announced next week when the selection committee meets.

A source close to the BCCI revealed that Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah have been offered rest and will join the team after the Bangladesh tour. Speaking to Indian Express, he explained:

“The senior players can get some rest and prepare for the upcoming full season of cricket. Rohit, Virat and Bumrah have been offered rest and will join the team for the Test matches against Bangladesh in September.”
