Rohit Sharma’s name added to unenviable list of Indian captains after Adelaide Test setback

It was Rohit’s fourth consecutive defeat as captain in Test cricket as he had also lost three consecutive games against New Zealand at home.

Rohit Sharma has joined an unenviable list of captains following India’s heavy defeat against Australia in the day-night Test in Adelaide. India suffered a ten-wicket defeat over Australia to allow the opponent to level the series at 1-1.

It was Rohit’s fourth consecutive defeat as captain in Test cricket as he had also lost three consecutive games against New Zealand at home. Thus, he becomes the sixth Indian captain to lose four or more consecutive matches in the red-ball format.

Other captains in this list are Datta Gaekwad, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. While other captains suffered defeats in four consecutive matches, Mansoor was on the wrong side as many as six times, while Sachin lost five consecutive games before making way for Sourav Ganguly.

Despite having Jasprit Bumrah and a solid batting unit, Rohit finds himself in this disappointing list, which is as shocking as it gets. India looked good with Jasprit Bumrah at the helm in the Perth Test, but Rohit’s return and captaincy change did not go as smoothly as the management would have liked.

Rohit Sharma’s tactics are a major concern

While this defeat is baffling, what is more surprising is his captaincy on the field and his personal form with the willow. As always, his fielding placements and bowling changes were baffling, allowing the opposition to come into the game and take it away from him.

He allowed hitters to settle down and play long innings, like Travis Head did. The pitches were too defensive and the Australian batsmen were able to come out of the blocks and keep the score at an adequate pace.

Furthermore, his personal form with the bat has also done nothing as Rohit has failed miserably to open the innings and bat in the middle order. Since the previous season at home, the Indian captain has 142 runs at an average of 11.83 in 12 innings, including a fifty.

He was listless while batting in the middle order in the Adelaide Test and recorded two low scores in both innings. His recent downfall suggests that Rohit is past his prime and his struggles will be exacerbated in the coming days.
