The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Qualifiers were marred by a massive controversy over Dinesh Karthik’s lbw call. The match between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is being played in Ahmedabad.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) keeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik came out to bat in the 15th over and didn’t get the kind of first ball he would have wanted. The right-hander was hit in the pads and the on-field umpire abandoned him.
However, Dinesh Karthik, after arguing with his partner, went up to the DRS. The keeper-batsman played across the line towards the ball that was full and straight, leaning late and hitting the pads. However, the UltraEdge showed that there was a large peak, but from the first glance, it was difficult to determine whether it was an off-bat or inside edge hitting platform.
However, after a few replays, it was visible that Dinesh Karthik’s bat hit the pad before the ball arrived and after that, there was a great finish. The third umpire, however, did not notice and made a blunder, considering the shot as a ball hitting the bat.
However, there was a huge gap between the bat and the ball and after the third umpire failed to dismiss it, the entire Rajasthan Royals team went crazy. Even head coach Kumar Sangakkara came out of his dugout to chat with the fourth official.

The third referee’s decision was not liked by many as it even made on-air commentators think about the thought process behind the dismissal. Sunil Gavaskar was sure that the bat hit the deck and said: “The bat has hit the bag, the bat has not hit the ball.”
Kevin Pietersen also claimed that the third referee was wrong in his decision and stated: “I don’t think the referee made the right decision.”
Irfan Pathan, who was also commenting, agreed that the third umpire did not take the right decision. He said: “The ball does not touch the bat, this was not the right decision by the third umpire.”
