Two days before the start of the T20I series against Sri Lanka, former Dutch all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate has joined the Indian team in Pallekele.

Recently, Ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar were confirmed as the new assistant coaches of Team India. Earlier this month, the BCCI introduced former opener Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach before naming the assistant coaches as well.

While Gambhir and Nayar left for Sri Lanka with the rest of the squad on Monday (July 22), Ten Doeschate was unable to make it as he was busy with his Major League Cricket job in the US. He was an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Knight Riders. The Knight Riders’ campaign in the second edition of the MLC came to an end last Sunday as they failed to qualify for the playoffs.

And on Thursday (July 25), Ten Doeschate joined the Indian team in Pallekele. Apart from serving as assistant coach for Los Angeles Knight Riders, the Dutch great also worked as batting coach at Kent.

He also shares a very good relationship with Gambhir. The former Netherlands captain had played under Gambhir’s captaincy in the IPL. He was part of Kolkata Knight Riders’ title-winning teams in 2012 and 2014. Earlier this year, he also joined Gambhir and Nayar at KKR as a fielding coach. Gambhir reportedly wanted Ten Doeschate as an assistant coach and BCCI eventually accepted his proposal.

Meanwhile, former South African pace bowler Morne Morkel is reportedly the favourite to become the new bowling coach of Team India. Morkel also played under Gambhir’s captaincy at KKR and also worked as the bowling coach at Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 and 2023.

India aiming for a winning start with a new coach and captain:

Team India will be looking for a winning start under new coach Gambhir and new T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav. The world champions will begin the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka as firm favourites. The series is scheduled to begin on July 27.

India has a formidable record against Sri Lanka in T20Is. Of the 29 matches played between the two teams so far, the Men in Blue have won 19 while Sri Lanka have won 9. After the T20Is, both teams will also play a three-match ODI series against each other.
