Pakistan national cricket team pacer Shaheen Afridi has subtly criticized white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten for his comments on the fast bowler being overworked. He said they have placed a lot of importance on workload management and there is no need to give it “a big deal”.
Afridi, since the last few months, has been under the scanner for some time. This is because the fast bowler has not been up to par with the ball and also appears to be fatigued. The left-arm pacer was also dropped from Pakistan’s squad for the second Test against Bangladesh.
After that, Afridi played in the Champions Cup, but his performances there were also not up to par. He captained the Lions team as he struggled with both his bowling and his leadership in the tournament. He was quite expensive with the ball since he made a lot of runs.
In the middle of the tournament, Pakistan white-ball coach Gary Kirsten made a massive statement about Shaheen Afridi. He said he was shocked to learn that the left-arm spinner bowled “three times as many overs as any other fast bowler in the world” in the last 18 months.
Shaheen Afridi, talking about managing the workload of players, cited the example of Pakistan greats Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. He said that the legends of the game had no workload problems and stressed that everything depends on each individual. Speaking to Sama TV, he explained:
“If we look at our legendary bowlers of the past, Wasim [Akram] bhai and waqar [Younis] Bhai, they didn’t have workload problems back then. I don’t know why we’ve given it so much importance over the past year. “It all depends on each player.”
There have been several experts and fans who have expressed concern over Shaheen Afridi’s workload. They are of the opinion that playing cricket continuously has exhausted the fast bowler and could also make him prone to injuries.
You need to be mentally fit and strong to perform – Shaheen Afridi
Shaheen Afridi further stated that players must be mentally fit and strong to perform. He further added that if the players’ bodies do not react the way they want, then the role of the management becomes important. He concluded by saying that there is not much workload and they should enjoy cricket. He added:
“You need to be mentally fit and strong to perform; you cannot perform by being lazy. At a time when your body is not reacting the way you want, you need support from management. There is not much workload, but we must enjoy anything” . Cricket we play.”
Shaheen Afridi will next be seen in action when Pakistan takes on England in the three-match Test series. He has been called up for the first match, which will be played in Multan from October 7.
