West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Joshua Da Silva has jokingly said that star player Shamar Joseph will have to pay for damaging the roof of the Trent Bridge stadium during the third day of the ongoing second Test match against England.

On the third day of the second Test being played at Trent Bridge, the West Indies cricket team started on 351/5, losing by 65 runs to the England cricket team’s first innings total of 416. Jason Holder and Joshua Da Silva returned to bat but the former captain was dismissed soon after by Chris Woakes in Nottingham.

Then Kevin Sinclair, batting at No. 8, was promptly sent back to the pavilion for just four runs by Gus Atkinson. Alzarri Joseph (10) provided brief resistance but also fell to Woakes. Jayden Seales was dismissed on his first ball, leaving West Indies at 386/9, still 30 runs behind at Trent Bridge.

The last man in, Shamar Joseph, known for his heroic performances in the lower order against Australia at the Gabba, joined Da Silva. He successfully defended Woakes’ three-run ball as Da Silva, batting on 44, kept hitting him for most of the time during his 71-run partnership with Joseph (33).

Da Silva (82*) dominated initially but Joseph soon found his groove, hitting boundaries off Woakes and Atkinson during his stay. In fact, Joseph stole the show with a spectacular six that created quite a stir among fans, both on the field and on social media. The incident took place in the 107th over, bowled by Gus Atkinson at Trent Bridge.

After defending Atkinson’s first delivery, the West Indies bowler launched a short ball over the square leg side for a huge six. Two balls later, another short ball from Atkinson flew over the square leg side and Shamar attempted a great shot as the ball soared high and landed on the roof of the Trent Bridge, smashing the tiles into pieces.

After the ball broke the roof of the stadium, fans had to quickly take cover as broken tiles fell down, narrowly avoiding any injuries to fans. The short third ball of the over resulted in Joseph hitting the ball off the top edge, sending it towards fine leg for a boundary. He added two more boundaries off Shoaib Bashir and Mark Wood before he was eventually dismissed by Mark Wook for 33, helping West Indies take a 41-run lead in the ongoing second Test against England.

Shamar Joseph will have to pay for breaking the tiles: Joshua Da Silva

Joshua Da Silva said at the press conference after the end of the day: “I was pretty confident but I still had to protect him because he is still number 11. He backs himself up with the bat, played some fantastic shots, broke a couple of tiles, which was good to see. But at the end of the day, it was my job to try to take the team as far as possible. He is going to have to pay for that (breaking the tiles).”
