Shubman Gill will be looking to get off to a flying start when he leads Team India in the upcoming five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe.

The youngster will have something to prove after failing to qualify for the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He was a notable absentee from the Indian squad, though he was named as one of the travelling reserves. Shubman Gill was released by the Indian team after the end of their American stint in the tournament.

He was released by the team, as was Avesh Khan, and was allowed to return home. Avesh Khan returned home from New York, but Shubman Gill decided to extend his stay in the US. On Tuesday (July 2), he landed in Harare from New York to begin his preparations for the series. On Monday morning, the Indian team also left for Zimbabwe.

Watch Shubman Gill land in Harare:

Shubman Gill has been named as the captain of the Indian team for the series as senior players have been rested following the T20 World Cup. Three players from the T20 World Cup squad were named for the series but have also been replaced after the Indian team was unable to leave Barbados on Monday due to Hurricane Beryl.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube were named for the Zimbabwe series. However, they have now been replaced by Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma and Harshit Rana for the first two games of the five-match series.

The series against Zimbabwe will be India’s first T20I assignment since being crowned world champions. The Men in Blue beat South Africa by 7 runs to win the T20 World Cup after a long gap of 17 years. The five-match series is scheduled to be played from July 6 to 14. All the games will be played in Harare.
