Indian batsman Shubman Gill has been the highlight of the Indian team in the year 2023. Gill was the top scorer of the year with 2154 runs in 48 matches. Gill scored a total of 7 hundreds throughout the year and was also the highest run-scorer in the Indian Premier League in 2023. For the same, Gill was adjudged ‘cricketer of the year’ at the Naman Awards 2024. Gill received the Polly Umrigar Award for the year 2022-23.
The Naman Awards are BCCI’s annual awards ceremony to honor the achievements of Indian players. The award ceremony returned after a gap of four years after 2020 and was held in Hyderabad ahead of the first IND vs ENG Test.
Shubman Gill was overwhelmed after receiving the ‘Cricketer of the Year’ award and posted the same on his official Instagram account. Gill in his caption spoke about his journey to cricket and revealed that there is a lot of nostalgia. Gill stated that he was 14 years old when he met his cricket idols and now plays with them in the same team. Shubman added that watching Virat Kohli win the ‘cricketer of the year’ award is something he will never forget.

Shubman Gill wrote: “So much nostalgia for coming here when I was 14 and meeting my idols and legends for the first time. Watching Virat bhai win the cricketer of the year award was something I would never forget. Pure motivation to go one step further and give everything for my country this year.”
Shubman Gill is now also set to lead for the first time in his cricket career. Gill will captain the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League 2024, after the departure of Hardik Pandya. Shubman Gill also showed a decent performance in ODI World Cup 2023 and scored 354 runs in 9 games and his highest score of 92 runs.
Shubman Gill has proven himself quite well in the ODI and T20I format but he is yet to give his best in the Test format. Gill, who scored his first hundred in the Test format in December last year, has not been able to maintain the same momentum. Since he made his Test debut in the IND vs. Test series. AUS in 2021, Gill has been able to get starts, but hasn’t been able to turn them into meaningful runs.
Coming back to his Indian Premier League career, Shubman Gill has played a total of 91 matches and has scored 2790 runs at an average of 37.70. Gill has slammed three centuries in a row with 18 half-centuries. Shubman Gill scored 890 runs in 16 games in IPL 2023 and won the orange cap.
However, as you advance in your career, you will also begin to have responsibilities. Gill is seen as captaincy material and his senior players are grooming him for the same. Gill is considered Virat Kohli’s successor and cricket experts believe that he will carry forward Virat’s legacy.
Shubman Gill will hope to prove his worth in the Test format during the IND vs ENG Test series starting January 25.
