Sourav Ganguly, the current director of cricket for Delhi Capitals (DC), has decided not to take over as the head coach of the franchise.

Sourav Ganguly is making the case for his former India teammate Yuvraj Singh to take up the head coaching post vacated by former Australia captain Ricky Ponting.

Ricky Ponting recently resigned as head coach of DC, which has failed to advance to the playoffs in the last three seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Rishabh Pant-led team finished sixth in the IPL 2024 and missed the playoffs despite having equal points with the fourth-placed RCB team.

Sourav Ganguly out of race to be Delhi Capitals head coach

In an interaction a few months ago, Sourav Ganguly showed interest in becoming the head coach of the Delhi Capitals.

However, it seems that he will not be taking over Ricky Ponting’s role. The franchise management is likely to announce a new coaching staff ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Sourav Ganguly has decided not to take over as the head coach of Delhi Capitals for IPL 2025. According to the Bengali newspaper

Aajkaal’s Sourav Ganguly is backing legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh to be appointed as the new head coach ahead of the upcoming T20 season.

The report added that Yuvraj is emerging as the likely choice for the Delhi Capitals head coach post.

The recent talks between Yuvraj and the franchise have been positive. The World Cup-winning cricketer is expected to take up the role of head coach, provided the negotiations progress smoothly.

Yuvraj Singh played for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League in 2015

Earlier reports suggested that Yuvraj Singh was in line to replace Ashish Nehra as the head coach of the Gujarat Titans.

However, the IPL 2022 champions are looking for a former Indian player to replace Gary Kirsten, who has become the white-ball head coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team.

According to Sportstar, Delhi Capitals are keen on adding Yuvraj Singh to their coaching staff. The Capitals are aiming to strengthen their batting line-up for IPL 2025.

They are considering Yuvraj Singh as a possible mentor for the team’s batsmen. Yuvraj has previously worked with players like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma despite having no formal coaching experience.

Yuvraj also played for the Delhi Capitals in the T20 tournament. The left-hander was acquired for Rs 16 crore in the 2015 IPL auction, making him the highest-paid player at that time.

During the 2015 season, he scored 248 runs in 14 matches for the team, but was released ahead of the 2016 IPL auction.

If Yuvraj Singh is confirmed as part of the coaching staff, there is a high expectation of immediate results.

He should lead a strategic revamp at the Delhi Capitals after their disappointing performances in recent seasons.
