Former South African fast bowling legend Dale Steyn on Tuesday announced that he will be leaving his services as bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. The first was done just before the IPL 2025 mega auction and ended his two-year coaching stint with the franchise.

The period in which Steyn was associated with SRH, as a player and now as a coach, was fruitful. Young talents like Umran Malik were nurtured, and he also helped many other fast bowlers. Earlier this year, Steyn was unavailable for IPL 2024 due to personal issues. James Franklin took over as bowling coach in his absence.

Under Steyn’s management, Sunrisers Eastern Cape won SA20 consecutively in 2023 and 2024.

While Steyn issued a statement that he will not be returning to IPL, he confirmed that he will remain associated with another team under the same franchise, Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league. He announced his decision on social media platform X.

“Many thanks to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as a bowling coach in the IPL; unfortunately, I will not be returning for IPL 2025. However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in the South. Africa. Two time winners here in SA20, let’s try to make it three in a row,” he wrote.

Under Steyn’s guidance, Sunrisers Eastern Cape won SA20 consecutively in the years 2023 and 2024. The IPL career has also been good as a player for the veteran, who has played for different franchises like Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers Bengaluru. , Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Lions. In total, he played 95 matches and took 97 wickets in his IPL career.

Recently, the training structure at SRH has undergone significant changes. Steyn was first hired when Tom Moody was appointed head coach in the latter part of 2021. Brian Lara was subsequently appointed in 2023 and for the 2024 season, the head coaching position passed to Daniel Vettori. When Franklin was appointed bowling coach and Vettori head coach, SRH reached their first IPL final after 6 years in 2024 where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.
