South Africa squads announced for series against Afghanistan and Ireland; Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram to lead

The South Africa national cricket team has announced the squads that will take part in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, along with the T20I and the 50-overs series against Ireland. Temba Bavuma will captain the team in the ODIs, while Aiden Markram will lead the team in the 20-overs format.

The South Africa national cricket team will travel to the United Arab Emirates to play the three-match ODI series against the Afghanistan national cricket team. The first match will be played on September 18, followed by the second and third matches, which will be played on September 20 and 22, respectively. All the matches will be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

The Proteas will then travel to Abu Dhabi for the two-match T20I series and the three-match ODI series against Ireland. The first 20-overs match will be played on September 27 and the second match will be held on September 29.

Following that, the ODIs against the Ireland national cricket team will begin on October 2, with the second and third games to be played on October 4 and 7. All matches will be played at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Jason Smith and Nqaba Peter have received their first call-ups for the ODIs and will feature in both series. Along with them, all-rounder Andile Simelane has also received his first call-up to the national team and will play in the ODIs against Afghanistan and the T20Is against Ireland.

Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, who missed much of the action due to a right calf injury, has made a full recovery and will play all three series for the South African National Cricket Team. While front-rowers Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje have been rested for the entire tour of the UAE.

Temba Bavuma, who will captain the teams in ODIs, has not been named in the T20Is, while on the other hand, Aiden Markram will be part of all three teams along with Tristan Stubbs, Ottneil Baartman, Nandre Burger, Tony de Zorzi and Bjorn Fortuin.

On the subject of team selection, South Africa head coach Rob Walter said they decided to give opportunities to young players as they have their sights set on the major ICC tournaments taking place over the next 18 months. He explained:

“We have decided to give opportunities to some of the fringe players, as well as those who have impressed in recent weeks and months.

“This has been a deliberate move by management, in line with our aim to build a broader pool of players to choose from as we prepare for the major ICC tournaments taking place over the next 18 months, with a long-term view of the 50-overs World Cup in 2027.”
