Suryakumar Yadav to lead Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma or Hardik Pandya to be released: Report

Mumbai Indians have reportedly finalized their retainer list ahead of the much-awaited mega auction IPL 2025. The auction is likely to take place in December this year.

While the BCCI was expected to announce the retention norms in August, the announcement was delayed. The board is expected to announce the rules in late September.

In the last mega auction, franchises were allowed to retain up to four players. Most franchises are reportedly interested in retaining at least five players ahead of the upcoming mega auction to retain the core of their teams. Things will become clear once the BCCI announces the rules in the coming days.

List of retained Mumbai Indians players:

As per reports, Mumbai Indians have all but finalized the three players they will retain ahead of the mega auction. According to Rohit Juglan of RevSportz, the five-time IPL champions have also decided to change their captain ahead of IPL 2025.

Juglan claimed that Jasprit Bumrah is Mumbai’s first retainer. He also stated that Suryakumar Yadav is not only the second retainer but will also lead the team next season. Suryakumar will replace Hardik Pandya as the team captain.

Mumbai re-signed Pandya for IPL 2024 through a commercial deal with Gujarat Titans and also named him their captain. However, Pandya failed to deliver as the Mumbai-based team finished at the bottom of the points table.

Although Pandya starred with both bat and ball in India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign, Mumbai Indians decided to remove him as their captain.

The decision could have been influenced by Suryakumar’s appointment as India’s T20 captain. Although Pandya was the favorite to replace Rohit Sharma as captain, the team management and selectors appointed Suryakumar as captain.

After confirming the first two retentions of the Mumbai Indians, Juglan stated that the franchise has retained one more player although he did not reveal the name. It means that Rohit, Pandya or both would be released by the franchise before the mega auction.

Bumrah SuryaKumar Yadav (C)’s first hold 👀 Now wait for the last one”, Juglan wrote.
