T20 World Cup 2024: Sunil Gavaskar challenges Virat Kohli to join him and Alastair Cook in this Elite list

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, after criticizing Virat Kohli in IPL 2024, has challenged the latter to join him and Alastair Cook in an elite list.

Both Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli had argued, not directly, but there were very good exchanges between the two. It all started after Kohli lashed out at the commentators for his silly comments about his strike rate and his inability to play spinners.

The RCB batsman’s comments came after a century of goals in IPL 2024 and his comments spread like wildfire.

It finally reached Sunil Gavaskar, who first criticized Star Sports for publishing Virat Kohli’s video again and again. Gavaskar then criticized Kohli for his comments against commentators, stating that if he doesn’t care about outside noise, then he shouldn’t even respond. Hopefully, the former cricketer’s latest comments don’t create another controversial row.

Sunil Gavaskar challenges Virat Kohli to score a century at Gabba

While speaking at a recent event, Sunil Gavaskar seemed to be taking a dig at Virat Kohli by saying that the latter is yet to complete a century at the Gabba.

Therefore, when he visits Australia later this year for the five-match Border-Gavaskar Test series, Gavaskar’s only wish for Kohli is to see him score a century at the venue.

It is the same venue in Brisbane, Queensland, where Rishabh Pant played one of the best Test knocks to help India claim victory over Australia in 2021. Despite leading India to victory, Pant could not become the second Indian to score another century there. .

But Sunil Gavaskar wants the successful Virat Kohli, who has never won a Ton at the Gabba, to finally break the spell. Gavaskar really wants the batting stalwart to become the third foreign batsman after him and former England captain Alastair Cook to score triple figures at the Gabba.

“On an individual level, [my wish] Perhaps for Virat Kohli it is that he becomes the third foreign player to score a Test century at all Australian venues. I think he doesn’t have one at the Gabba, so if he gets a century at The Gabba, that means he will join me and Alastair Cook,” Sunil Gavaskar said at an event.

Virat’s record in Australia from 2011 to 2020

Virat Kohli was not part of the Indian team that won the Gabba Test match and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2020-2021. The then Indian captain had left to be with his wife Anushka Sharma for the birth of his first daughter Vamika. Kohli was present in the Indian team that hosted Australia in the BGT series last year and this year the expectations will be very high for him.

In what will be his fifth tour of Australia since making his senior debut, Virat Kohli will be hoping to add more runs to his tally in the Land Down Under. In 13 Test matches in Australia, Kohli scored 1352 runs at an average of 54.08 along with 6 full centuries and 4 half-centuries.
