Former Indian cricketer and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar believes that the current Indian team is one of the strongest teams in the world ahead of the T20 WC 2024.
Most of the Indian team players have flown to the US capital to prepare for their only warm-up match for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Virat Kohli is the only player who is yet to arrive in New York, while that others have already started their practice sessions. This will be another ICC event that the Indians would like to win and end their trophy drought.
Last year, Rohit Sharma’s men had two golden chances to win an ICC event. Such occasions happen very rarely and despite knowing it, the Indian team wasted both opportunities.
They lost in the World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup final, both times against the same Australian team. The Australians will now look to complete the ICC Trophy treble.
What did Dilip Vengsarkar say about India’s team for the T20 WC?
While speaking at a sports journalists’ award function held recently in Mumbai, Dilip Vengsarkar was invited as the chief guest of the event. In it, the former cricketer spoke on a variety of topics, from India’s chances in the World Cup to Australia posing a constant threat to the Indian team in ICC tournaments.
He was also asked what he thinks about the composition of the current Indian team and whether it is among the best in the world. In his response, Dilip Vengsarkar stated that the current team is actually one of the best in the world. He then criticized Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh and KL Rahul for unknown reasons, stating that the Indian team would be better off without these three players.
“I think the current Indian team is one of the best in the world, I would say. If you could, you know, eliminate Gill, Rahul or Rinku Singh, I’m sure they are a very strong team. And I wish them every success because I think he’s one of the best in the world right now.” – Vengsarkar said at the meeting of sports journalists.
Vengsarkar emphasizes the teams that need a good start in the World Cup
Dilip Vengsarkar then added that the first six overs of the powerplay will be very imperative not only for the Indian team but for all the teams. Vengsarkar stated that powerplays were crucial for teams during the IPL where batsmen just wanted to hit every ball and the same can be expected in this edition of the World Cup.
“The key players would like to play an important role in this T20 World Cup. It is very difficult to say in this format because they are all very important members of the team. But the thing is, as you have seen in IPL, the first six “They were very important. How to start well in the first six was very important and, of course, in this format, anything can happen.” – added Vengsarkar.
