Ollie Pope was chosen as the captain of the fifth test against India after Ben Stokes was rested
Although the captaincy was given in the absence of Ben Stokes for the oval test against India, Ollie Pope is not the right man to be the next Test of England according to former captain Michael Vaughan.
There were multiple questions about Pope’s credentials to have the opportunity to be the permanent captain. But Vaughan cited another specific reason why the 27 -year -old does not fit the paper.
Pope has been a regular test since Stokes took over the captaincy in 2022 and Brendon McCullum as a chief coach. From the 60 games he has played until now, Pope averages 35.58 with 3,558 races in his name, including nine hundred and 16 years fifty.
Michael Vaughan says that Ollie Pope is not the successor of Ben Stokes as a test captain
Vaughan, who put England with the famous 2005 victory in ashes at home, said Pope’s personality has a lot to do with the captaincy.
“I look at someone like Ollie Pope, who looks like a fantastic Vicecapitan. He is a brilliant person to have with the captain’s side to find ideas. Sometimes captains are not bright captains,” Vaughan said in the special podcast of Test Match.
Vaughan took the example of former opener Marcus TresChothick, who was his deputy, but did not adapt to the role of the captaincy.
“Marcus Trescothick was a magnificent Vicecapitan for me, but you wouldn’t want to give him the captaincy,” he explained.

The former first -order hitter also felt that England granted a large total of 396 in the second entries in a green lid like the Oval was not the fault of the Pope and pointed out the fact that the team dropped Yashasvi Jaiswal four times when he scored 118.
“It’s not Ollie Pope’s fault, England is in this position. They are fallen catches,” Vaughan said.
Harry Brook the natural leader
Vaughan suggested that Harry Brook, who was recently appointed as the captain of the white ball, is the natural successor of Stokes if the all -terrain is reduced from his post. Brook was appointed captain after Jos Buttler resigned from the captaincy after the early departure of England of the Champions Trophy 2025.
“Harry Brook, for me, looks like a leader. It looks like a born leader. If Ben Stokes is injured in the future, can’t you get to stay as vice-capital and Harry Brook get the leadership role?” said.
