Touted as Ashwin’s replacement in Test, young spinner starts again as top-order batsman in Ranji Trophy

Although he mainly bats in the lower middle order, his promotion turned out to be the right move as he demonstrated his batting prowess.

An off-spin bowling all-rounder, seen as Ravichandran Ashwin’s replacement in Test cricket, has played a magnificent knock in the latest Ranji Trophy game. Although he mainly bats in the lower middle order, his promotion turned out to be the right move as he showcased his batting prowess.

Washington Sundar scored a fantastic 152 off 269 balls, with the help of 19 boundaries and a maximum, for Tamil Nadu while batting at number 3. After his innings, Sundar said that he considers himself a top-order batsman.

“I definitely consider myself a top-notch hitter. I’m very happy with the kind of opportunity I got, batting at number 3. For me, one thing is very important: I need to be able to do what the team demands. It’s a team game. That’s what I always think about. Hopefully, I can hit those shots consistently.”

It is worth noting that Sundar began his First-Class career as an opener but was later placed lower in the order and the focus remained on his bowling. However, as soon as he got a chance to bat in the top order again, Sundar made sure to remind everyone of his batting prowess.

Washington Sundar added to India squad for New Zealand series

Washington Sundar immediately got reward for his excellent performance in the Ranji Trophy by bagging a place in the New Zealand series for the second and third Tests. He scored 152 runs and has taken two wickets so far.

He can play as a bowling all-rounder if India feel the need for a personnel change in the remaining games. His inclusion shows that India have their eyes set on the future and are looking to find a replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin.

Ashwin is aging and won’t be around forever, so India needs to find alternatives, and a home series could be the ideal way to find them. Sundar’s last Test match came during the series against England in 2021.

It could be an ideal time to include him, given that he has done well in the national tournament. It will be interesting to see if Sundar gets a place in the XI.
