After the captain got out, Shubman Gill (23) got off to a good start but fell early. KL Rahul (86) and Shreyas Iyer (35) played decent hands that put the hosts in a strong position.
But India’s top scorer was Ravindra Jadeja (87), who played a sensational innings that helped the team take the lead. KS Bharat (41) and Axar Patel (44) supported him well as the hosts took a 190-run first innings lead, ending the innings at 436 runs. For England, Joe Root was the pick of the bowlers with his four-wicket haul.
England in their second innings batted positively at first. Zak Crawley (31) and Ben Duckett (47) bathed aggressively and added 45 runs for the opening partnership. After that, England lost wickets in quick succession and were reeling at 163/5.
However, Ollie Pope took a big step forward for his team and played his best Test innings. He finished with an innings of 196 runs that put England in the dominant position of the game. The visitors finished with a total of 420 runs, setting India a target of 231 runs to chase. Jasprit Bumrah was the home team’s star with the ball as he picked 4 wickets.
India made a vigilant start to the chase. Yashasvi Jaiswal (15) and Rohit Sharma (39) added 42 runs for the opening partnership. But Jaiswal’s wicket opened the floodgates for the opposition as they dismissed Shubman Gill for a duck and soon Sharma was also killed.
KL Rahul (22), Axar Patel (17) and Shreyas Iyer (13) could not make an impact as the English bowlers were all over the batsmen. The hosts were reeling at 119/7 when Ravichandran Ashwin (28) and KS Bharat (28) came together and added 57 runs together.
But it was Tom Hartley’s spectacle with the ball as he grabbed 7 wickets with the ball and helped England beat India by 202 runs. They won the game by a margin of 28 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series.
