India and South Africa faced each other in the first match of the two-match series at the Supersport Park in Centurion. It was the Proteas team that emerged victorious and scored important points in the World Test Championship.
India were the first to use the bat and it was a horrendous outing for them with the bat. Captain Rohit Sharma (5) fell early and opened the doors for more wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal (17) tried to get going but couldn’t as he too died soon.
Shubman Gill got out through the leg side and then Virat Kohli (38) and Shreyas Iyer (31) steadied the innings. The duo added a vital partnership but came out in quick succession of time. After that, KL Rahul (101) hit a magnificent ton and took his team to a total of 245 runs. For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged five wickets.
South Africa in their reply did not get off to a great start as they also lost an early wicket in Aiden Markram (5), Tony de Zorzi (28) and Keegan Petersen (2). But then it was all about Dean Elgar (185), who played a sensational innings and bowled India out of the game. David Bedingham (56) and Marco Jansen (84*) supported him well.
Based on the strong batting performance, South Africa recorded a total of 408 runs on the board. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers as he took a four-wicket haul and was the only impressive bowler in the side.
It was an unforgettable outing for India in the second innings. They had a torrid outing with the bat and their wickets fell like a pack of cards. Captain Rohit Sharma went for a duck early and that led to the collapse and Jaiswal (5) died soon.
Shubman Gill showed some resilience and scored 26 runs but could not convert the outing he had. After his wicket, Virat Kohli (76) kept one end and played magnificently. But he did not get the desired support as at the other end the wickets fell like a pack of cards.
Nandre Burger picked four wickets while Marco Jansen bagged three scalps as South Africa bowled out India for just 131 runs to win the game by a huge margin of an innings and 32 runs. They take a 1-0 lead in the series and India’s dream of winning the series in South Africa was diminished.
