Virat Kohli wanted to play the tests a few weeks ago: what happened since he led to retirement of the test before the tour of England?

When Virat Kohli announced his withdrawal from the trial cricket on May 10, the moment surprised many. Only a few months before, he had trained with the Delhi Ranji trophy team, played a first-class game after the Sydney test and, according to the reports, he told his coach that he was aimed at “reaching 4-5 centuries in England”, referring to his iconic 2018 iconic tour.

“I talked to Virat a few weeks ago and asked if I would play the County Cricket to prepare for the England series. He said: ‘I will play 2 Indian games in England, I want to reach 4-5 centuries in the England series, as I did in 2018 when I reached the work of Ranji Match,” said Delhi trophy trap.

Even in January, Kohli was considered part of the trial plans for the England series as of June 20. So what changed?

Virat Kohli and BCCI: From Ranji’s return to the sudden test exit, what did you change?

Until recently, everything pointed to Kohli preparing for a great test return. After fighting in the Australia series earlier this year, where he scored a century in Perth, but only 90 races in the next eight entries, Kohli seemed intentional to return strong. It was expected to play two games from India A in England before the five -test series and seemed mentally and physically committed to another crack in the format.

The Delhi Ranji coach even confirmed in Star Sports that Kohli was “interested” of playing and had spoken with him about the county or India a preparation. Then, the sudden change of posture, from “aiming hundreds in England” to get away from the tests, naturally lifts your eyebrows.

BCCI’s role: A new era and a changing tone?

In January, there were already signs that the internal position of the BCCI towards the upper players was hardening. With Devajit Saikia replacing Jay Shah as secretary, the reports suggested that there was pressure to overcome “superstar culture.” After the loss of the 1-3 test series of India in Australia, where both Rohit Sharma and Kohli had a lower performance, the senior officials pressed for difficult calls and a generational change.

A BCCI official told Dainik Jagran at that time:

“It is necessary to give such a strong message that no player should be considered larger than the game.”

According to the reports, this public and pointed message was discussed just before a special general meeting (SGM) in January, where the future of the upper players, including Kohli and Rohit, was discussed.

If there were private conversations, perhaps push or signs of selectors or members of the Board, Kohli could have felt that the door of the test was closing, regardless of its intention to continue. It is also worth noting that Rohit Sharma, who only weeks ago spoke with Michael Clarke about the success of prayer in England, also abruptly retired from the tests.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma relieved themselves in silence?

None of the players gave signs of disinterest in the tests publicly. Both were appointed in the A+ category of BCCI contracts earlier this year, a category for players of every format. Both played Ranji games after the Australian tour, which now turns out to be their last appearance in White. The retirement of Rohit’s captaincy and the exit of the Kohli test have arrived without farewell series or a last trial game at home, a rarity for the players of their stature.

Although there is no confirmed indication of a forced exit, the coincidental moment of two unconditional that is withdrawn in a nearby succession, despite the current plans of playing, has fed the speculation that the BCCI is orchestrating a quiet transition before the next cycle of the World Testing Championship.

Does India look at the transition in the new WTC cycle?

Beyond the form and internal policy, there is also the broader context. The Indian test side is experiencing a generational change. Shubman Gill will take care of Captain, and the team is gradually rebuilt around the youngest batters like Yashavi Jaiswal and Nitith Kumar Reddy. Kohli may have calculated that it would no longer be a central figure in the equipment of the equipment’s red ball.

With Odis and the Champions Trophy on the horizon, and India focused on the youngest test staff, Kohli could have decided to retire on their own terms, before the transition made that decision for him.

Without farewell, without closure?

Perhaps the most disconcerting part of this story is the lack of a farewell test. Kohli played for the last time in Sydney, a game that, by the way, now becomes his last trial game. For a player of his stature, it is unusual not to have a farewell in India or even an advertisement of the final tour.

Was it a personal call or was never offered the option?
