Young Pakistani batsman Mohammad Haris surprised everyone when he hit a stunning back-of-the-bat shot for a six during a match between Jaffna Kings and Kandy Falcons in the Lanka Premier League 2024. The match was played at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
Haris came in to bat at number 3 as Kandy Falcons had made a spectacular start. Playing just his sixth ball of the match, Haris decided to bowl an incredible ball over the wicket-keeper’s head. It was the last over of the powerplay in Kandy Falcons’ innings.
Fast bowler Asitha Fernando bowled a low, full delivery over the stumps. Knowing that the player occupying the third man was inside the circle, Haris decided to make use of the fielding restrictions and decided to play a backward delivery. But surprisingly, she did not change the side of her bat and ended up hitting the ball so well that it crossed the boundary ropes.

Even Mohammad Haris was surprised by the shot and smiled. Bowler Asitha Fernando also did not believe what had just happened and ended up with a smile on her face. Such shots are quite rare in the world of cricket. However, Haris could not get a big score and was dismissed for 26 off 20 balls. He hit 1 four and 2 sixes during his knock.
Jaffna Kings defeat Kandy Falcons in thrilling match
Coming into the match, it was a thrilling encounter with Jaffna Kings edging out Kandy Falcons by 1 run. After being put in to bat first, Jaffna Kings scored 187-7 in 20 overs, thanks to a sublime century from wicketkeeper-opener Kusal Mendis. Mendis scored an unbeaten 105 runs off 54 balls, which included 12 fours and 5 sixes.
Mendis’ contribution was so big in Jaffna Kings’ innings that the next highest scorer in the line-up was by Azmatullah Omarzai who scored 26 off 13 balls while batting at number 7. Omarzai’s quick emergence in the end took the Kings to a big total. The bowlers led the way for Kandy Falcons as left-arm spinner Chaturanga de Silva and off-spinner Ramesh Mendis shared 4 wickets between them for 32 runs.
Chasing an elusive target, Kandy Falcons started on the right foot with 48 runs in the first 4 overs. Andre Fletcher was brilliant at the top with 38 off 21 balls while Mohammad Haris tried to maintain the momentum but was dismissed for just 26. Youngster Kamindu Mendis batted well with his 32 off 23 balls.
Captain Wanindu Hasaranga and Angelo Mathews tried to maintain the required tempo of play but were unable to put up big scores due to Fabian Allen’s brilliant left-arm spin in the middle overs. Even though Ramesh Mendis quickly scored 30 at the end, the Falcons fell tantalisingly short of the target.
Fabian Allen took 4-24 while off-spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth took 3-30 for Jaffna Kings in their respective spells.
