Rohit Sharma, on Tuesday (October 1), led Team India to a brilliant 7-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the 2nd Test at the Green Park Stadium, Kanpur.
Although there was no action for over two days of the Test, India managed to beat Bangladesh to sweep the two-match series. On the fifth and final day, Bangladesh started the game with the bat. They were 26/2 at the start of the day and lost the wicket of Mominul Haque in the third over.
Shadman Islam and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto then shared a 50-over stand for the fourth wicket. At that time, it looked like Bangladesh could compete with India. However, once Ravindra Jadeja sacked Shanto, the floodgates opened.
From 91/3, Bangladesh was reduced to 94/7. A handy knock of 37 runs from Mushfiqur Rahim helped Bangladesh post a respectable total of 146 runs. Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja got three wickets each for the home team.
With a target of 95 runs, Team India lost two wickets before crossing the finish line in the 18th over. After Rohit Sharma (8) and Shubman Gill (6) departed cheaply, Yashasvi Jaiswal (51) scored a fifty and shared a 58-run stand with Virat Kohli (29*). After Gill’s departure, Kohli and Rishabh Pant took India home.
Rohit Sharma’s brilliant gesture:
After the resounding victory, Rohit Sharma came up with a brilliant gesture for Akash Deep. Continuing the long tradition of Team India during the post-match celebration, the captain presented the trophy to the newcomer. Rohit received the trophy from BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla before handing it over to Akash Deep.
In recent years, Indian captains have made it a habit to present the trophy after a series win to the newcomer or the youngest member of the team.

Akas Deep made his Test debut during the England series earlier this year and hit the ground running in international cricket. He took three wickets on debut before playing a key role in the final series win. In two Tests against Bangladesh, the right-arm pacer picked up five wickets.
With the Test series done and dusted, India and Bangladesh will now lock horns in a three-match T20I series. The series is scheduled to begin on October 6.
