Jasprit Bumrah, on Saturday (June 29), shone with the ball as India beat South Africa by 7 runs in a thrilling final to secure the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy.

India, who batted first, scored 176 for 7 in 20 overs. The Men in Blue were reeling at 34 for 3 at one point before a brilliant fifty from Virat Kohli rescued the team. The former India captain scored 76 runs with the help of 6 fours and 2 sixes. Axar Patel also played a crucial knock of 47 runs. For South Africa, Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje got two wickets each.

In response, South Africa were at 151 after 16 overs, needing 26 runs from the last four overs. With Heinrich Klaasen batting on 52 and David Miller at the other end, the Proteas looked destined to win the game comfortably.

However, the Indian bowlers bounced back in style and snatched victory for their team from the jaws of defeat. South Africa’s innings just went off the rails after Hardik Pandya dismissed Klaasen in the 17th over. In the end, South Africa finished their innings on 169 for 8.

Jasprit Bumrah played a key role in the win. He gave India the first breakthrough by dismissing Reeza Hendricks with a stunning delivery in the second over. Later in the 18th over, India’s pace spearhead delivered another brilliant delivery to Marco Jansen’s castle. After taking his first wicket with an outswinger, Bumrah dismissed Jansen with an unplayable inswinger.

Meanwhile, Bumrah was adjudged Player of the Tournament for his brilliant performance in the competition. He finished the competition as the third highest wicket-taker. The right-handed bowler took 15 wickets in 8 games while maintaining an economy rate of 4.17.

“Normally I’m the one trying to control my emotions and get the job done, but today I don’t have many words, I don’t usually cry after a game, but the emotions are getting the best of me. We were in trouble. But we’re really delighted to win from that stage,” Jasprit Bumrah said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“I felt good, I tried to stay in a bubble and tried not to think too much about the future. When the big day comes, you have to do it, throughout the tournament I felt very clear. I always think about a ball and an over at the Maybe, I don’t think too much about the future. Emotions can take over, they were taking over, but you have to keep them under control, but now that the game is over, you can go out and shout and scream,” he added.
