Niroshan Dickwella

Galle Marvels captain Niroshan Dickwella made a hilarious mistake during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 Qualifier 1 against Jaffna Kings. The match between the two teams took place on Thursday (July 18) at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Galle Marvels captain Niroshan Dickwella did not have a great performance with the bat in the tournament qualifier 1 against Jaffna Kings. However, he has only himself to blame for the way he got out. The wicket-keeper batsman got himself out when his team lost an early wicket in the high-pressure game.

After Jaffna Kings scored a total of 177 runs, Alex Hales and Niroshan Dickwella started the chase aggressively. They put on 29 runs together in no time and the way they were batting, it looked like they were going to form a big partnership on the board. But that was not the case as the left-hander got out easily.

During the second ball of the third over, Azmatullah Omarzai bowled a delivery which Niroshan Dickwella attempted to bowl and missed. The bowler, as well as wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Mendis, immediately started appealing as they were certain that the Galle Marvels captain had stolen it.

However, the umpire was not interested and declared him not out. But what caught the attention of many was that Niroshan Dickwella asked for the review as he felt that the umpire had given out. But the review was not taken into account and then Omarzai asked Mendis to do the review which revealed that the batsman had put his glove just behind the wicket.

Here is the video:

Niroshan Dickwella scored just 9 runs off 4 balls with the help of two fours. But fortunately his wicket did not cost the team much. After that, Alex Hales (36) played a brave hand at the top. But the real blitz came from the bat of Tim Seifert and .

The duo scored a half-century and added 92 runs for the third wicket. Their sensational performance with the bat enabled Galle Marvels to reach the target in 18.1 overs. They will now face Jaffna Kings in the final as they defeated Kandy Falcons in Qualifier 2.

I thought I was out because I was caught behind, I didn’t see the umpire – Niroshan Dickwella on his dismissal

Niroshan Dickwella spoke about the win over Jaffna Kings and expressed his satisfaction with the way his team played. He also spoke about his dismissal, saying that he did not realise that the umpire had given him a not out and that was why he opted for DRS. Speaking to the commentators, he explained:

“I’m very happy with the way it’s going so far. We’ve been exceptional, we’ve played some really good cricket and there’s healthy competition for places in the final XI, that shows what a good team we have. We wanted to give Janith Liyanage a chance at No. 4, he’s been batting well in lower order.

“Bhanuka loves to bat at number 5 and that’s why we thought of promoting him. I thought I was out for being caught behind, I didn’t see the umpire and I saw them celebrating, I felt him hit my arm and that’s why I went to check,” he concluded.
