Veteran Indian pace bowler Ravichandran Ashwin was left fuming during the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2024 knockout match between Dindigul Dragons and Chepauk Super Gillies. The match between the teams was held on Wednesday (August 31) at the NPR College Ground in Dindigul.

Ravichandran Ashwin was one of the main factors behind Dindigul Dragons’ victory in the Tamil Nadu Premier League play-off. The veteran Indian bowler led from the front against Chepauk Super Gillies and ensured that he took his team to the next stage of the tournament.

The all-rounder was also furious and eager to win the match. This was quite evident when he got angry at his teammate during the chase and was fuming while sitting on the bench after his team player did not give him his all while running.

During the 16th over of the chase, Shivam Singh and Dindigul Dragons centre Sarath Kumar were in the middle. On the second ball, Kumar played a poor shot but fortunately the fielder bowled him out. This upset Ravichandran Ashwin who was sitting in the dugout, just near the boundary ropes.

Ravichandran Ashwin stood up in a rage and was seen scolding his teammate. He even threatened him. This video went viral on social media and many praised the bowler for his intensity even though it was not a match of great importance.

Ravichandran Ashwin played a vital innings for his team. The off-spinner promoted himself and came out to bat at number 3. He hit a magnificent half-century and ended an innings of 57 runs off 35 balls. The all-rounder batted at a strike rate of over 162 and also hit 4 fours and 4 sixes in his innings.

Ravichandran Ashwin added 101 runs in partnership with Shivam Singh (64). Their sensational partnership took Dindigul Dragons closer to victory before contributions from C Sarath Kumar (12) and Suboth Bhati (14*) took the team home with 4 wickets and on the penultimate ball.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who won the Man of the Match award for his heroics, admitted that it was not a perfect match for them but they did well to close out the match. He said that as an international player, it was his responsibility to do well and they are looking forward to doing well in the upcoming matches. Speaking after the match, he explained:

“Pressure does these things (in the impending collapse), we will have to talk, but the important thing was that we closed the game. It was an imperfect game, despite our poor bowling and fielding, we kept them to a low score.

“As an international and IPL player, I had a responsibility to do well (with the bat). We didn’t play a perfect match, but I hope we will do well in the upcoming matches. I am thankful to the crowd for coming.”
