India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was controversially dismissed during the second innings of the third Test between India and New Zealand in Mumbai. It was a great moment in the game as Pant was fighting a lone battle for India.
During the 22nd over of India’s second innings, Rishabh Pant came down the wicket towards Ajaz Patel, but he was not close enough to deliver the ball. The ball went over his inside edge and hit his pad before rising into the air.
Goalkeeper Tom Blundell completed an easy catch and New Zealand made a big appeal. The referee, however, did not make it known. Looking at the size of the wicket, Tom Latham decided to use his last check. There was some movement on the Ultra edge as the ball passed the bat, but it was unclear if it was the bat hitting the ball or the bat hitting the pad.
In the end, third umpire Paul Reiffel ruled in favor of the fielding team and asked field umpire Richard Illingworth to reverse his decision. Rishabh Pant was absolutely distraught as he slowly crawled to the pavilion. The Mumbai crowd was furious to see what was happening and erupted with “cheater chants”.
