In one particularly notable moment, Shah Rukh Khan struck his signature pose, arms outstretched, alongside none other than Meg Lanning, the esteemed former Australian cricketer and current captain of the Delhi Capitals. With his trademark charm, Shah Rukh Khan stood shoulder to shoulder with Lanning, demonstrating her iconic pose with impeccable finesse.
But the excitement didn’t stop there. On the way to the Mumbai Indians camp, Shah Rukh Khan warmly hugged and exchanged greetings with his players, even imparting a famous line from his beloved classic film, “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” to Issy Wong.
The Bollywood luminary made it a point to personally greet and connect with each player, leaving stars like Jemimah Rodrigues, Taniya Bhatia, Shafali Varma and Pooja Vastrakar in awe of his presence. All the players who were present at that time had a great time, but today all friends will become rivals when Delhi Capitals take on Mumbai Indians in the opening match of the Women’s Premier League 2024.
Mumbai and Delhi were the two standout teams of the inaugural season last year; The latter team qualified from the group stage, while Mumbai had to go through a qualification period. Both teams had 12 points to their name in 8 matches and both won 6 and lost 2 games.
Sourav Ganguly greets Shah Rukh Khan with a warm hug
Perhaps the best moment of the evening came when former India captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly met Shah Rukh Khan. Both of them are undoubtedly national icons and also have a connection with the Indian Premier League circuit.
Sourav Ganguly was chosen as the star player and captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders before the start of the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008, the same franchise in which Shah Rukh Khan also has a stake. The Ganguly-led KKR team had a disappointing first season as they finished 6th in the points table with just 13 points, winning 6 matches and losing 7.
Ganguly was then dropped from the captaincy the following season and was also dropped from the XI on several occasions. He was then released by KKR ahead of the 2011 IPL mega auction with Sourav Ganguly being bought by Rising Pune Super Giants.
The Prince of Calcutta then retired from the IPL the following season before taking up administrative duties at the BCCI. Meanwhile, after many years, when Shah Rukh Khan met Sourav Ganguly, there was nothing but admiration between the two as they greeted each other with warm hugs and gave fans a moment to savour.
