KL Rahul had a very funny response to a wide call by the umpire in the ongoing first ODI between India and Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The incident took place in the 14th over of Sri Lanka’s innings when all-rounder Shivam Dube was bowling to opener Pathum Nissanka. On the fourth ball of the over, Dube bowled one which went down the leg side. Nissanka missed the ball and the ball went straight to wicketkeeper KL Rahul.

As the ball sailed very close to the batsman, Dube thought he had found his man. The Indian player also heard a sound and was convinced that Nissanka had touched the ball with the edge. However, the other Indian players, including Rahul, were not convinced.

Meanwhile, the umpire signalled a wide ball while the Indian players were busy discussing whether to review the ball or not. And while the discussion was going on, KL Rahul hilariously asked his teammates if the IPL rule of reviewing wide balls is also allowed in international cricket.

“Does the IPL rule apply? (Is the IPL rule applicable?)” asked KL Rahul. In 2023, the IPL introduced a new rule that allows teams to review wide-ball and no-ball decisions using DRS. However, the rule is not available in international cricket. Subsequent replays showed that the ball had not touched the bat but touched the thigh pad on its way to the wicketkeeper.

Watch KL Rahul’s funny reaction:

Talking about the game, Sri Lanka were 143/6 after 36 overs at the time of writing this report. The hosts won the toss and opted to bat first. They got off to a poor start with Mohammed Siraj dismissing opener Avishka Fernando for just 1.

Nissanka and Kusal Mendis then added 39 runs for the second wicket before the latter was out for 14. The likes of Sadeera Samarawickrama (14) and captain Charith Asalanka (8) did not last long either. Nissanka completed his fifty but could not convert it into a big score and was out for 56 to leave his team reeling at 101 for 5.
