The West Indies and the IPL have a long history of history. Since 2008, several renowned T20 cricketers have played in the IPL. From Chris Gayle to Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo, these three have been the most cap-winners in the league.

Andre Russell and Sunil Narine have been the match-winners for the Kolkata Knight Riders and have played a major role in their success over the years. In recent years, Nicholas Pooran has been one of the Caribbean cricketers who has played consistently in the last few seasons.

At the recent meeting between the IPL franchises and the BCCI, several important points were raised by the team owners. All of them were discussed and debated.

The BCCI has responded that it will respond by the end of August 2025 and confirm the number of retainers. Meanwhile, in this article, we pick five West Indies cricketers who can retire from T20s if they are not selected in the mega auction of IPL 2025.

Jason Holder

Holder last played in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2023. None of the franchises he played for have given him such a long chance in the IPL. He was even ruled out of the 2024 T20 World Cup due to injury issues.

His exclusion from the T20 World Cup has diminished his chances of being bought back by any of the franchises in the mega IPL 2025 auction.

Jose Alzarri

Joseph had a costly stint in the 2024 IPL with RCB. He picked up just one wicket in the three matches he played and fell out of favour with the national team. He played in the 2024 T20 World Cup but could not put up any impactful performances.

Joseph does not have good numbers in T20Is, which could deter teams from adding him to their squad for the upcoming season.

Hope Shai

Hope is a technically sound batsman. He is made for Test and ODI cricket. T20 cricket is not his game and that was evident in the few matches he played for Delhi Capitals last season. He scored just 183 runs in nine matches at an average of just 22.

He is a much better batsman in the other two formats and may consider retiring from T20 cricket if he is not picked in next year’s mega auction.

Rovman Powell

The West Indies T20I captain played for Rajasthan Royals last year but could not make the most of it. He had the chance to win a few matches for the team with the bat but could not.

He also failed to win the T20 World Cup as captain of West Indies at the ICC event earlier this year. If he is indeed not selected for the IPL next year, he could well consider retiring from the format.

Akeal Hosein

Interestingly, Hosein was benched for the entire IPL 2024 after he was won over in last year’s mini-auction.

The talented West Indian pacer failed to find a place in the starting XI despite being one of the best bowlers in the format. He plays in all franchise cricket leagues but is unlikely to be bought in the upcoming IPL auction.
