THE LOWDOWN
WEST INDIES
West Indies stunned England with a four-wicket win in the first ODI, successfully chasing down 326 despite being 213/5 after 38.4 overs. They were indebted to Shai Hope, who struck a magnificent 109 from 83 balls. He was extremely well supported by Romario Shepherd, whose late hitting included three 6s and 48 runs in 28 balls. Another victory here would see them wrap up this three-match ODI series with one game to spare.
ENGLAND
On the back of an awful World Cup campaign, England looked like getting back on track after racking up 325 in a good batting performance that saw all bar two players reach at least double figures. However, despite the efforts of Rehan Ahmed and Gus Atkinson, the tourists were taken to the cleaners with the ball, particularly Sam Curran, who recorded England’s worst ODI figures of 0-98 from 9.5 overs.
THE PREDICTION
Jos Buttler must be so frustrated right now, not only at his own form, but at England’s inability to finish a game. The batting is there and the depth still exceedingly strong, but certain bowlers under-performed to the tourists’ cost. West Indies showed their ability and that win will have given them huge confidence. But England should have put them away in the first ODI and shouldn’t let them off the hook so easily this time around.
BETTING TIP: ENGLAND TO WIN
