‘When KL Rahul and Kohli can continue…’ – Former India opener sparks controversy with big statement about under-fire Test pacer

The pacer’s recent form has not been convincing.

A former Indian player has made a big statement while defending an Indian pacer who was not up to the mark. Citing examples of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, he said if they can continue, why can’t that speedster whose recent form has been poor?

Aakash Chopra has supported Mohammed Siraj, whose place is under threat after a series of below-par performances. On Jio Cinema, he said Siraj should be given time to regain his lost form just like Kohli and Rahul were given support.

“When KL Rahul and Kohli can continue despite their average performances, why is there a problem with Siraj? Virat is not a small player and has been phenomenal for the team. KL has also shown his class. Likewise, we should also give Siraj time.”

Mohammed Siraj has snared just 12 wickets at an average of 42.83 and a strike rate of 66.66 in 14 outings since the England series earlier this year. His lines and lengths have been erratic, and Siraj too doesn’t seem to be in rhythm, increasing the workload on Jasprit Bumrah to do the heavy lifting in the pace department.

Akash Deep could replace Mohammed Siraj in the second Test

After another below-par performance in the first Test against New Zealand, Mohammed Siraj may be given a break to rework his game. Akash Deep, who has made an impact in his short Test career, could get a place in the playing XI.

Akash’s attributes are ideal for Indian conditions as he bowls on the line of stump and his lengths are immaculate. Therefore, it allows him to pin hitters in his box and get more pitches and LBW, and given his recent form, the team could be tempted to draft him, especially after losing the first game.

It will also help Siraj to take some time off and see where his bowling is lacking so he can work on it and come roaring back. His presence will be crucial on Australian decks, especially after his success last time out.

Siraj has 13 wickets at 29.53 runs each in six innings in Australia, including a five-wicket haul. A lot will depend on his performance in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
