Why did Mitchell Starc of DC occur without balls, but not the Vignesh Puthur of MI in IPL 2025? Referee Anil Chaudhary explains

The IPL 2025 season has witnessed its fair part of controversies.

The Premier League of India 2025 (IPL) has had its right share of controversies. One of them was involving Delhi Capitals (DC) Pacer Mitchell Starc and Mumbai Indians (MI) Vignesh Puthur, although on two different occasions. During the Delhi Capitals match against Rajasthan Royals (RR), Mitchell Starc delivered a background ball while passing through the wide line in the fourth ball of the Super Over.

The delivery of the Australian pacemaker was finally declared without balls. Vignesh Puthur had done something similar during the Mumbai Indians party against Kolkata Knight riders. Puthur had also delivered a bottom ball. Apparently he touched the return fold, but half of his rear leg was out of the white line.

Anil Chaudhary explains Starc vs Puthur No-Balls

Vignesh Puthur, however, escaped the punishment since the referee did not consider it without balls. The famous referee Anil Chaudhary shed some light on the controversy during a conversation with Cricket Jatin Sapru presenter. “The main reason (why the delivery of STARC is a ball without balls) is that he lands his foot while touching the lateral line,” Anil said in a video that climbed on Instagram. “That means that his first touch in himself is to cut the line,” Sapru replied.

Anil added that the situation with Vigneh was different because the first touch of Kerala Spinner was within the line. He said that the first touch of a bowling player is all that matters.

“But with Vignesh, his first touch is inside the line and then the back of his heel lands outside the fold. Every time you see these things, you need to watch the full video (and not just an image). Only the first touch matters and nothing more after it lands.

“Both the front foot and the landing foot are part of the ‘Auto No Ball’ system and the TV referee mandates these things in each ball. Whether it is outside or not, the front foot, the return fold and the burst fold will be verified without failure. It is nonsense and has nothing to do with the umpires in the field,” he developed the year of 60 years.

Vigneh and Starc’s performances in IPL 2025

Vignesh Puthur has had a decent Campaign of IPL 2025 so far, taking six four -game Wickts. Mitchell Starc, on the other hand, has proven to be an integral part of the Rhythm alignment of Delhi Capitals, taking 10 WICKETS of seven games.
