Will Glenn Maxwell leave Royal Challengers Bengaluru? The all-rounder gives a major hint ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction

In a shocking development, explosive Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell could leave Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ahead of the mega IPL 2025 auction. Glenn Maxwell has reportedly unfollowed his current franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Instagram.

Glenn Maxwell has been a consistent member of the Royal Challengers’ playing XI since 2021. He played memorable knocks for the franchise in the T20 tournament. However, he struggled to make an impact in this year’s IPL tournament. He was even omitted from the team for a few matches.

The 35-year-old scored just 52 runs in 10 innings at a disappointing average of 5.78 and a strike rate of 120.93. The right-handed batsman was dismissed for a duck in the Eliminator against the Rajasthan Royals (RR). However, the off-spinner took six wickets at an average of 21.50 and an economy rate of 8.06.

Will Glenn Maxwell leave Royal Challengers Bengaluru?

There are rumours that Glenn Maxwell has unfollowed Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Instagram. However, it could not be verified if Maxwell was following the franchise earlier. RCB fans and users on social media X (formerly known as Twitter) shared that the all-rounder has unfollowed RCB.

Glenn Maxwell was bought by the Royal Challengers for a whopping Rs 14.25 crore in the 2021 auction. They retained him for Rs 11 crore for the next three seasons. In 2021, Maxwell scored 513 runs at an average of 42.75 and a strike rate of 144.10. He scored 301 and 400 runs in the next two seasons.

Bengaluru Royal Challengers to release Faf du Plessis

The Bengaluru-based franchise might part ways with captain Faf du Plessis for the upcoming season. The team management might consider an Indian player for the captaincy. KL Rahul, who currently leads the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), is one of the candidates to watch out for as he might part ways with the franchise.

Du Plessis’ captaincy is in doubt following mixed results in the IPL. In his debut season as RCB captain in 2022, the team finished third but lost in the playoffs. The RCB team failed to advance to the playoffs during the 2023 season. They suffered six consecutive losses in 2024 but managed to make it to the playoffs.

RCB is one of the few IPL teams that is yet to win an IPL despite having played in every season. The team has reached three finals, in the 2009, 2011 and 2016 editions. The RCB team has been criticised by critics for their strategy. They relied on a batsman-heavy batting line-up without a quality bowling attack in their team.

IPL owners and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will meet soon to discuss key issues like player retention policies, match entitlement options and salary caps. The important meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 30, in Mumbai. The franchises will get clarity on the number of retentions.
