The BCCI and IPL franchises are reportedly set to discuss the issue of foreign players showing no respect and commitment to the auction process. The much-awaited meeting will be held in Mumbai on Wednesday (July 31).
While the main topic of the meeting is the retention and right-to-match (RTM) option rules for the upcoming mega auction, the lack of respect by foreign players towards the auction will also be a major topic of discussion, according to Cricbuzz. In recent times, several foreign players have pulled out of the tournament after being bought by franchises during the auction.
Some of the players who have pulled out of the IPL in recent times include English duo Jason Roy and Alex Hales and Sri Lankan Wanindu Hasaranga. According to the report, the players pulled out of the competition due to low bids during the auction. While the players have cited various reasons such as injuries or fatigue for pulling out of the IPL, the franchises were disappointed with their decisions.
IPL franchises look for action and missing foreign players:
The franchises now want the BCCI to come up with measures to ensure that a situation like this does not arise in the future. Earlier, the franchises had a one-on-one meeting with the BCCI CEO and during that interaction, they requested that action be taken against the players who were absent from the IPL without any valid reason. Some of the franchises have also asked that such unreliable players be banned from the field.
Franchises have stated that the actions of the players have disrupted their planning. Franchises plan the season before the auction and buy players to strengthen their squad. Even in IPL 2024, several teams suffered a major blow during the playoffs when the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) called up players for bilateral international matches. Some of the big names who missed the playoffs were Jos Buttler and Phil Salt.
The report also notes that franchises have also highlighted a pattern where some foreign players opt out of the mega auction and instead enter the mini auction to secure higher bids. The franchises want the BCCI to take action on this issue as well.
